It's Show Week, Pittsburgh!

Meet Debi Mottes of The Creative Dabbler...
I live in Monaca, PA located in Beaver County. When people walk into my house, they always want a tour because each room is uniquely painted and decorated.  My daughter’s room even has an entire wall of leopard print!  I have 3 grown daughters and 3 fur “grandkids”.  I am a Penn State alum with a Bachelor’s degree and a 15 year career in social work.  “We are Penn State!”
After my Social Work career,  “The Creative Dabbler” was open. My business consisted of everything from faux finishes, stenciling, hand painting, murals, creating accessories, and all things decorating. I recently closed my business after 21 fulfilling years and decided to pursue my talents off of the ladders. Painting furniture in a variety of colors and patterns has peaked my interest since creativity is in my blood. That, as well as my first love – anything crafty!
As the oldest cousins in my family, my sister and I used to make holiday favors for all of our younger cousins. After that, my imagination kept soaring….through all of my daughters’ activities  - school, church, girl scouts – I was always the craft lady.  My daughter’s friends always refer to me as the Creative Mom; my daughter’s friend always jokes that she wants to be the next Mrs. Mottes.

I have attended many craft shows over the years, but this will be my first Avant Garde craft show. I am excited to be a part of it! My inspiration and creative process are pretty much the same thing – I was blessed with a fix it gene. Repurposing things or making them look better comes natural to me. Good thing, because I have many projects that I have been waiting for my retirement to get to!  My basement is full of furniture and many things waiting to be a future project.

Meet Dawn Wallhausen of Dawn Glassworks...
In addition to being a glass artist, I am an editor and a writer, a mother of three and a wife, and co-caregiver to a big, sweet, goofy dog. I like to hike, camp, swim, draw, paint, read, and bake and I travel when I can.
I started learning to make glass beads around twenty years ago. When I was a child, we had a family friend who made specialized glassware for laboratories. One Christmas, he made me a glass ornament with my name etched into it. That ornament is the first thing I can remember sparking and deepening my interest in glasswork. The mosaics came along a little later, but I have probably been making them for around fifteen years. For me, glass is an inspiration in itself. I love the million different shades, opacities, and textures. But all kinds of art and artists provide inspiration, too. Paintings, photographs, and three dimensional art of all kinds can spark an idea.
I mostly do glasswork as a hobby and give much of what I make away as gifts or donations to fundraisers for causes I support, as I have a full-time job as an editor. I do like to do a show around the holidays, though. I'm happy to work this way, but I wouldn't resist if my glass art took off.

Some of the things I make are purely artistic expressions, but I do like to make things that are both practical and interesting to look at. That is why you will find small housewares decorated with my lamp-worked beads and trays or storage boxes covered in stained-glass mosaics among the jewelry at my table. The main message I wish to convey is that art and beauty make life infinitely better. This is my first Avant-Garde show and I am so excited!

Coming To You This Weekend Pittsburgh!

Meet Kimberly Ryan from Kimberly Ryan Art...
I have been painting since childhood so I would say it is a lifelong passion! What inspires me the most is everything around me. People, animals, nature and landscapes - as well as other artists - I spend tons of time looking over their work.
I got introduced to this hobby when my mom was coloring and drawing with me from age 3.  think that is a continuous process that continues from day to day and year to year. I make it a practice to create something every day. I like to collect a variety of images ad reference them as I sketch or paint. I work all hours of the day and night just letting things come to me as the painting progresses. In five years I hopefully see myself still growing. The message behind my artwork is that I try not to impart my own feelings - I want the viewer to have their own personal experience.

Meet Brittany Papas from Papas Designs...
My name is Brittany Papas. I am the owner and artist behind Papas Designs. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and live locally in Lawrenceville with my husband, two amazing identical twin daughters, and two fur baby dogs. By day, I am a full-time School Counselor for a local school district. I enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, and being creative.
I have been making and selling jewelry since 2004 when I lived in Charleston, South Carolina, but
established Papas Designs as a business a few years ago with the start of my Etsy shop. Before 2004, I was exposed to jewelry making, stained glass, and mosaics through the wonderful art program my high school had to offer. Creating jewelry and other crafts is my personal escape. When I create, I am in a very happy place where I can get lost for hours. I treat this creative outlet as my own version of self-care and a healthy avenue for mental well-being. Like I said earlier, I am a counselor by profession.
My love of gemstones! I was a huge rock collector as a child. I would go to the science store in the mall to find my own geodes to crack open at home and even had my own rock tumbler. I collected rocks or shells wherever I went. As I got older, I found a way to incorporate my love of gemstones into wearable art. I always loved to craft and create as a kid, but when I was in high school, I was able to explore different opportunities through the art program. I took a jewelry class every year in addition to other types of classes. When I went off to college, I started making gemstone jewelry as a fun outing with friends.
I purchase pieces for my jewelry that I find are beautiful without always having a set plan in mind for what I’m going to create. When I am creating a piece, I look around at my supplies and put
combinations together that I think will work. I try to make pieces that cover a range of styles and sizes, and I only put my name on something that I am satisfied with and can stand behind.  I hope to see myself grow locally and expand to include furniture and home goods into my business as I
also like to refinish furniture and have recently began to upholster pieces and build with wood. The message behind my work would be to find a piece of jewelry as unique as you. One-of-a-kind pieces designed for every female to feel just as beautiful and confident on the outside as they do on the inside.

Meet Andrew Barrowman from Barrowman Photography...
I picked up my first camera just two short years ago and became immediately hooked.  I love the idea of being able to capture how I see the world, and then be able to share my vision with others! There is so much beauty in the world and being able to share that beauty inspires me.
I just wanted to start traveling more and thought I’d grab a camera to tag along with. I never thought it’d become such a passionate hobby to me. I discovered my talent by pointing the camera, and shooting! Composition and having an eye for photography is unique to the artist and that’s what I love about it. I typically see something I want to capture and immediately get an idea for how I want to shoot it. I run through composition, lighting, mood, perspective and probably 10 other things I can’t think of right now before I set up the camera! My dream is to make photography a full-time job. Right now I am just sharing my work and hoping people like it! The message behind my work is get out there, explore new things and places and get creative!

Ready for Show Week Pittsburgh??

Meet Dorothy Chester from Dory's Jewelry...
I am a retired pharmacist who was looking for a creative outlet when I discovered bead weaving.  After 2 classes, I was hooked!!  I have been "beading" for 5 years and this will be my first Avant-Garde show.  I have always liked jewelry, so tend to create items that I would like to wear.  I especially like working with different shaped glass beads, using the shapes and colors to create new and interesting patterns.  My jewelry is wearable, unique and affordable.  And I love making it!!

Meet Nicole Crawford from Airmeth Aromatherapy...
My name is Nicole and my passion for aromatherapy began about 5 years ago when I started looking for natural ways to take care of myself and my family. I was so amazed at the results I started to spread the word. However, I quickly discovered that not everyone is comfortable with handling pure essential oils right from the bottle, or they just do not have the time to learn about how to use them safely. I still wanted people to experience the physical and mental benefits of using essential oils so I started to make products that we use everyday like soaps, lotions, and healing aids. With these products people discover the benefits of using essential oils without doing any extra work. It's a win win because I got to discover another passion of mine which is developing and making these products! This will be my first season with Avant-Garde Art & Craft shows.

Meet Alisha Chaffey from ASA Enterprises...
ASA Enterprises is a division of the ASA Social Fund for Hidden Peoples. By utilizing fair trade practices and providing micro-loans, we employ underserved artisans in Africa to create unique crafts. After selling all our craft items, ASA invests all profits into our partner organizations in Africa, including two children’s homes (Bright Kids Uganda & The Great King’s and Queen’s Children’s Centre), a disabled children’s school and support program, the United Against Gender Violence – Blessed Survivors group – supporting women and children, who have been emotionally and/or physically scarred by acid attacks and other forms of gender violence and “Adopt a Village” Project for Barlonyo, Uganda.
In 2008, Bright Kids Uganda USA (non-profit) was established to provide for the educational, medical and sustainable project needs of the Bright Kids Uganda children’s home in Africa. In 2015, the ASA Social Fund for Hidden Peoples, a non-profit organization was founded to reach out to several additional organizations closely associated with Bright Kids Uganda. This will be my second Avant-Garde show.
I believe in respecting the ability and uniqueness of every individual, regardless of their current circumstances. That all people should be able to participate in shaping a better future for themselves and their children.

We work directly with the crafts persons in Uganda to assist in purchase of materials and provide orders for crafts. All colors, designs and future products are at the discretion of the artisan.

Our goal for ASA Social Fund in 5 years is to have expanded to assist hidden peoples in other countries, including programs in Hungary and other parts of Europe. Our message is simple...Every person has value. By promoting and facilitating education, employment, creativity and self-reliance a brighter future is available to everyone.

Meet Kim Goodman from Punchneedle Art...
I am a 1977 graduate of Kent State Universty with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising. I married and moved to New Brighton, PA 6 years ago. I've been "punching" for 5 years and this is my first Avant-Garde show.
I am inspired by so many things...my patterns are often the result of something I've seen in print or even from fabric swatches. Some are also from patterns I've found online. After receiving a punchneedle piece as a gift in 2011, I loved it so much I just had to create them myself.
My process is pretty simple.  Once I find a pattern I'd like to do I trace it onto weavers cloth.  Next I select the colors of floss. I want to use and then I start punching. I've recently created an Etsy shop and hope to continue to grow my business through that, as well as social media sites and shows. My message, or rather hope, is that my work brings a smile to someone's face. That it is enjoyed and appreciated.

Popping up in Pittsburgh!

Meet Kitty Savel from Kitty's Kreations...
I currently work full time as an Epic software trainer for Allegheny Health Network here in Pittsburgh.  When I am not working I am designing bracelets, pendants and necklaces using wire, beads and crochet.
I have been crocheting with wire and beads for about four years.  I took a class at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet festival and have been teaching a class in Crocheting with Wire and Beads for the last three years at the festival.  I have taught at local yarn shops in the Allegheny and Westmoreland counties of Pennsylvania.  I have also taught at the Society for Contemporary Craft located in the Strip District here in Pittsburgh.

This will be my second Avant-Garde Arts and Craft show! I am so excited to be accepted to be a vendor in that show.

I love working with wire and beads.  There are so many textures and colors to choose from.  I take my inspiration for my designs from fabric swatches, magazine ads and nature.

At the age of 10 I learned to knit from an older sister.  A year later I taught myself how to crochet.  I am also self taught in the mediums of collage and assemblage.  I have exhibited my assemblage pieces here in Pittsburgh.

As I said before I took a crochet with wire and beads class at a knit and crochet festival here in Pittsburgh.  I was instantly enthralled with the technique and combination of the two mediums.  I have since leaned wire weaving and created my own designs for necklaces, pendants and bracelets.
I often choose a focal bead for its color and shape and then design a necklace or pendant around it.  I have a book of 100's of fabric swatches that I use for color inspiration.  I experiment with wire gauges, weaving and wire coiling.  I often lose track of time when I am working.

In five years I see myself exhibiting and selling my work at various venues.  I was recently asked to sell my work at art centers in both Rehoboth Beach, Deleware and Ocean City Maryland.  I will be showing and selling my work at other shows this Fall including Roland's restaurant in the Strip District in Pittsburgh on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).  I also see myself teaching.  I love the look on students' faces when they see what they have created in my classes.
For the most part I m self taught.  I have been blessed with opportunities to show and sell my work.  My message is that there is an artisan in every one of us.  All people really need is encouragement to nurture their inner artist

Meet Kelly Foster from Kelly's Krafts...
My name is Kelly and I am a nearly 30 year old (omg I can't believe I just said that, I'm getting so old!). I have had way too many surgeries and that's kind of how I got into making crafts I guess. Last year around this time I was preparing for surgery # who cares and decided if I was going to be off work, I was going to need something to do. My very first wreath was my Kooky Thanksgiving Tommy the Turkey. After that I decided that I needed to make a wreath for every season and/or holiday. A year later, I have all the holiday wreaths I need but I still love making them. I have been doing this for about a year now. This is going to be my second Avant-Garde show.
I typically just see something I like and decide to try it with my own twist. Maybe it's better maybe it's worse but it's mine. I also don't make exact duplicates of anything. If, for example, I am making candy cane wreaths, they will all be different somehow. Never the same. I feel like that makes it a little more personal so it's not like they are just being pumped out of a factory or ordered in a kit or something.
I saw some cool wreaths on Pinterest and needed something to so while laid up from surgery, and then when people kept telling me that my wreaths were nice I decided to start selling them.

Usually my creative process is pretty simple. I see a picture and think of what I can do to make it better or my own. Then I go from there and then second guess myself and ask opinions of people to see if it looks good or not. Sometimes I just can't see that it looks amazing.
I wouldn't call this a business. It's my hobby so, in five years, I see myself still making crafts. I feel like if I made it into too much of a "business" the fun would get sucked out of doing it.

Meet Heather Mazzarella from Lemon Tree Soapery...
My name is Heather Mazzarella and, together with my mother Linda Mazzarella, I run Lemon Tree Soapery. We have been doing this together for 5 years and counting! We create high quality soap, candles, and other bath and body products that are healthy and skin loving! I am lead soaper, candle maker, and bath bomber but our business is truly a family affair. My mother, a self taught soaper, started our business and taught me everything I know. She still helps with production and managing all aspects of our business. My father lends a helping hand by gathering and cutting down recycled alcohol bottles to be repurposed into our eco-candle collection. My fiancé and fellow artist drew and designed all of the artwork on our packaging. Together, we bring you all kinds of treat yourself goodies!
This is our first Avant- Garde Show. We are very excited to be a part of it! Just about everything and everyone around me inspires me to create. I am lucky enough to belong to a large circle of artistic family and friends where finding an outlet for creativity is highly encouraged. I have always had an interest in skin care and love making products that have a positive benefit on the skin. I struggled with problem skin as teenager and unfortunately it took a long time to realize that natural products were far more effective in treating my skin than the harsh chemicals in most name brand products. Seeing the transformation in my own skin through the use of my own healthier, more natural products was really encouraging and helps motivate me to create for other people.
The initial spark was when my mother started working at a gift shop that supported local artisans. Being the only non-artisan that worked there at the time, she was inspired to pick up the soap making trade. I have always had an interest in skin care, as I had struggled with problem skin as teenager, so we took on the hobby together. Over the years, its grown from a hobby to a business and we’re so grateful that we have the opportunity to work together doing what we love.
As a teenager with difficult skin, it unfortunately took a long time to realize that natural products were far more effective in treating my skin than harsh chemicals. I love that I can create a soap bar or a bath bomb that not only cleanses, but has specific benefits for skin. I love researching new additives, recipes and techniques. I’m constantly learning and developing my craft to make a better product.

I make sure to start each day with a positive attitude, a cup of coffee and some music. The entire creation process is really therapeutic for me. To see all of the raw materials come together to form something beautiful and beneficial is really gratifying.
I hope to still be creating soap, candles, and bath and body products for myself and others to enjoy!

For me, my products are for more than just than skin health. I find it important to take a minute every day spend some quality time with yourself. Bath and body products can improve metal health as well through Aromatherapy and Self Care. I make time to enjoy my products every day for all they’re worth.

Welcome to Show Week, Pleasant Hills!

Meet Abigail and Alyssa from Daring Between...
Hello, our names are Abigail and Alyssa. We are sisters. We work full time as creators and designers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each of us see beauty in different ways and things, and we're proud to translate the romance of beauty we see around us to our fashion forward Jewelry and Apparel.

We've always enjoyed sharing the beauty we see with those around us, which we both do additionally as Photographer (Abigail) and Makeup Artist (Alyssa).
DaringBetween was created about 2 years ago out of the desire to share with others our unique fashions and designs, all the while getting paid to do it!  This will be our first show!

Anything and everything inspires us. We find inspiration in places like the depth that colors have, to the way someones eyes sparkle when talking about something they love.
Sitting at home when we were little girls, we had the opportunity to explore the art, passion and creativity we'd call our own. Imagine living in a castle with rolling hills that screamed out to a young child's imagination telling us that it could be anything we wanted. (We lived in an old hundred year old house with about a quarter acre of land, but hey, we were little people!)

That's where we began our never-ending search for everything beautiful and inspiring.
(Abigail) I can't remember a point in my life were I wasn't creating something, when I was little I was always finding little scrapes of fabric for clothes for my dolls or odds and ends to decorate outfits for myself. When I got old enough my mom first taught me how to hand sew and from there on out it was off to the races! Any fabric that my mom wasn't using and allowed me to have, turned in to either a pillow for my doll's bed a blanket or dress. Really anything I could think of! I love being able to have an outfit that is uniquely me and doesn't look like anything else out there.

(Alyssa) I've always been driven to create the things that I found fascinating or was interested in. So when I was little and summer camp came around with it's jewelry making activities, I decided I wanted to figure out how to make my own type of jewelry that I'd actually want to wear. That started what has continued to become a never ending learning and creating process.
Our creative process is definitely gradual through inspiration. Imaginative. Quality through a pretty big touch of perfectionism.

In five years we hope to still be growing, and to be a quality brand with products our customers love!

Each of us see beauty in different ways and things, and we're proud to translate the romance of beauty we see around us to our fashion forward Jewelry and Apparel. Unique is beautiful. You are beautiful.

Meet Susan Gates from Fundametals Studios...
Hi!  My name is Sue Gates and I live in the Pittsburgh, PA  area.  I have always loved to create and currently own a quilt shop in my area where I sell sewing machines, fabrics, notions, etc. and teach loads of classes.  While I love that, I needed a new creative outlet and always wanted to work with sterling silver.  After many years of classes and urging from family and friends I decided to sell some of my pieces.
I have been honing my art for 5-6 years now and absolutely love it.  I am so looking forward to participating in three Avant Garde shows this fall!
I find that a lot of my inspiration comes from nature as I love to create sterling pieces with dimension that brings them to life.  I decide on the shape I want, saw that out, pattern my metal, finely finish it and hammer to get the dimension.  Many pieces then have gemstones added to give a message of natural beauty.  My collection includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings.
I hope to be involved with many more Avant-Garde shows going forward…it is always great to meet new people!

Meet Kelly Foster from Kelly's Krafts...
My name is Kelly and I am a nearly 30 year old (omg I can't believe I just said that, I'm getting so old!). I have had way too many surgeries and that's kind of how I got into making crafts I guess. I wouldn't call this a business. It's my hobby so, in five years, I see myself still making crafts. I feel like if I made it into too much of a "business" the fun would get sucked out of doing it.

Meet Erin Athey from Gerties Attic Jewelry...
I’m a life-long Pittsburgher that lives in the South Hills with my husband of 20 years and 3 cats.  I love old movies, gardening, crafting, and hunting for vintage and antique treasures.
I have been creating and crafting my entire life, but have only started to seriously get into jewelry making the past 5 years.  I started my jewelry line, Gertie’s Attic, about 4 years ago and began selling at craft shows.  This is my first Avant-Garde show and I’m excited to be a part of it!
A love of antique jewelry that I have collected for many years is what really inspires me. When I began designing and creating my own jewelry line, it was only natural that I turned to my love of Victorian and Art Deco designs for inspiration. I draw my unique sense of creativity from these eras for many reasons, including a deep appreciation of art from these times and a love of nature that inspired many artists of those eras.
I’ve been making and crafting my entire life.  My grandmother was always making things and some of my fondest memories of her were making Christmas ornaments with her or learning to crochet from her.

I inherited my Great Aunt’s jewelry from the 1920s.  Much of it was beaded and needed to be restrung, so I taught myself how to properly knot pearls and beads and how to repair and restore the jewelry.  I found that I really enjoyed doing it and loved the uniqueness and craftsmanship of the jewelry.
My jewelry designs feature brass stampings, often made from antique dies.  I also use many deadstock and/or repurposed antique jewelry components and cabochons in my creations.  I usually start out with a unique stamping, component or cabochon as my inspiration and let the design flow naturally from there.

I would like to have more online shopping capabilities for customers and to grow my business by participating in larger craft shows within the next five years.  I am also always looking for new ways and skills to improve my offerings.  But no matter what, I would still be making jewelry.  This is my hobby and I love to do it, whether I am selling it or not.

What I hope that my jewelry says is...Don’t be afraid to be your unique self, whether it is trendy or not.  I make what I love and always will, trendy or not.  Trends come and go, but classics are forever!

Meet Rosemarie Gerdich from Gramma Rose's Crochet Sundries...
I started out in the U.S. Air Force working on the electronics in on the F4 Phantom fighter jet. When I got out of the service, I went back to school for a degree (AS) in electronics and got a job in a Pittsburgh manufacturing company. After a few years, I got a job at a local technical school teaching aviation electronics. And so, started my career in instruction and training. I have been teaching, in one form or another since 1987, first at three technical trade schools (electronics) and then, starting in 2000, at field sites for propulsion equipment, manned light rail vehicles and automated people movers. I have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction in adult learning and training.
On the creative side, about 10 years ago, a friend showed me a simple single, double and shell stitch; and I ended up making an afghan for my daughter. It wasn’t perfect but it was warm. I made several more afghans for family that turned out much better.
Then my daughter had a baby and planned to use cloth diapers. When researching this, she came across information on the advantages of using woolies (wool diaper covers). I bought some wool from eBay so that if she didn’t like the cover, I wouldn’t be out too much money. She loved it, and so I made several more. My granddaughter did not wear one pair of plastic pants. My daughter used the woolies until Amelia was potty trained.
I moved onto other types of projects: scarves, hats, baskets, market bags, things for the kitchen, etc. Then, when my granddaughter was about 16 months, she spied a ragdoll in a crochet book I have. She wasn’t saying very many words yet but she let me know that she wanted that doll. I enjoyed making Betty-dolly and Amelia loves her still. I made several others for sale as well as for other grandchildren. My latest doll project is Amy Pond/Silence inspired if I could only get the plaid shirt right.
A few years ago, I combined my talent with the hook and yarn with some ideas from my son-in-law, the graphic novelist, and my nerd line was born. My hats, dolls, gloves, etc. are inspired by science-fiction and comic book characters such as Princess Leia, Katniss, Garnet, Doctor Who, Thanos, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and a host of others.
I really don’t have a creative process. I see something on Pintrest or Etsy or just wandering through life and think, “That would be cool.” My daughter, son-in-law and their friends also give me ideas. Sometimes I buy crochet patterns but that is mostly for the unique stitches. I usually change something about the project. There are very few things that I have made that follow any one pattern. In most cases, I look at a picture and make up the pattern as I go along. I usually forget to write it down so typically my products are unique and one of a kind.
I have not participated in an Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show previously; however, I am excited about joining the other craftsmen for this show and many future shows. As for the future of my business, I don’t see it changing much. I enjoy the craft shows, meeting other artists, keeping the business small.

The message for my work is fun. I like to do fun projects and work with fun colors. If you are not in the market to buy crochet, stop by my table anyway and say hello. I’ll bet a nickel that you will find something that will make you smile.

We're Back!

Meet Mick and Kristina Spiro from RockedOutVibrations... We are Mick and Kristina, RockedOutVibrations. We are obsessed with all things ...
